Accuracy in Media
Oxymoron or Dichotomy?

This is Dark Cloud on Monday, January 13, 1986.

Accuracy in Media and such conservative think tanks have decided to keep track of what they call examples of liberal bias in the American press and television. Every once in a while, AIM turns up on a television show and presents an example of how they would handle the news, followed by a discussion with newsmen and a coda by the host and then a commercial.

This is not new, of course. Certain fringe political parties have done commercials posing as news stories, and religious groups have done this for years. There is little doubt that this is an all-out attempt to censor the news. For example, a true story on the Soviet Union would invariably start out with, in conservative views, like this: "Michael Gorbachov of the Soviet Union arrived in Vienna today to meet with NATO representatives.  The Soviet Union, a totalitarian state with only one legal political
party, religious persecution and no automobiles, is presenting its own etc. etc.”

I like that.  I heartily agree with AIM and their goals. That the news should be accurate, like most novel and heretical notions, will of course meet opposition from just about all the entrenched liberal hoo-hahs of the establishment who have set out to hand over the US to the Soviets on a silver platter, after first pocketing their cash and moving to Albania.

Yes, we can all look forward to meeting TRUTH in the news now.

No doubt AIM will approve of the following introductory remarks to news stories.

“President Ronald Reagan addressed the VOFW today and decried the declining morality of the American family. Reagan, who is divorced from his first wife and married his second when she was two months pregnant, said he stood shoulder to shoulder with war veterans.  Reagan, whose military service consisted of making movies in California, spoke of his great respect for John Wayne, another great American war hero who never served in the military….”

Or, how about:

“Jerry Falwell, an overweight Baptist yahoo in a world of want, has changed the name of the Moral Majority to the Liberty Foundation (or whatever)…..”Or, how about:

“Attorney General Edwin Meese, easily the most unqualified man for high office in recent memory, issued today another observation that embarrassed the legal community…”

Or:

“Fidel Castro, heroic socialist, announced today from his private hunting preserve…”

Or:

“AIM, an organization of right wing zanies who resent being dragged forward into the 1950's, issued another pointless communiqué this afternoon…….”
