The Colorado Daily has been under fire for printing an editorial about homosexuals a few weeks ago. The writer referred to gays as infantile personalities, among other things, and there was indeed the strong whiff of the homophobe throughout the whole piece. Ah, but Jospeh Sobran, the author, is right-wing almost by definition, since he entitled his column the Right Side, and no reader worthy of his or her intellectual salt could construe Sobran's views as anything but Sobran's views. Predictably, Boulder's politically sensitive left got liquored up and fired off some of the most fascist Letters to the Editors ever to appear. The denigrators of Sobran want him banned from the paper. They want the Daily to "Combine its open door editorial policy with discretion and the highest form of discrimination.” In other words, the writers want censorship of views contrary to their own, evidently the highest form of discrimination. There is a great deal of controversy among the practitioners of psychiatry and homosexuality over what exactly causes that condition. It is altogether likely that there are several, everything from biological impetus to potty training to various forms of social rejection. So when Sobran says that some gays exhibit immature behavior beyond the norm and, at bottom, are simply sick, he can amass a certain amount of evidence for that view. His detractors can amass evidence that his is a narrow and one-sided view. The difference is that Sobran does not advocate silencing his opponents. Yet he is the right wing and they - supposedly - are the Left. You remember the Left? Freedom. The exchange of ideas. The belief in the common good, the common wealth. Yet, around the world it is the Left that is the more image conscious, the more hypocritical in professing openness and yet controlling the press. And here in Boulder, the Left has been reduced to saying ‘We don't advocate censorship because that is wrong. We just advocate you not print things contrary to our views.' And they wonder why the Right makes such a big deal of Ortega shutting down La Prensa, and why the public cringed at that act. Fascism is, at root, a method to an end, usually an end of monarchial dictatorship. And you shall know who the fascists are - whether in South Africa, Nicaragua, Borneo, or the United. States - by who advocates censorship, whether under the guise of protecting morals, national security, improper politics, or insulting to a demographic group.
