The Fundamentalists Win
|

if a tree falls in the forest, and it's the first amendment, would you hear it?

This is Dark Cloud on Wednesday, November 12, 1986.
The Fundamentalists won, many of you know in a recent ruling in some obscure state or other. It will be reversed, eventually, because zealotry has no role in either education or law. The ruling allowed unpleasant facts to be removed from school books if it conflicts with favored superstition, idiocies, and bigotries of current pre-eminent religious hordes. Depressing. But coupled with the attacks on the First Amendment and selective interpretation of the Founding Fathers’ intent by Edwin Meese, a clear picture of what this nation would become under the born-again right emerges. It is more than frightening. Even arch-conservative George Will is appalled and nauseous. So am I, for what it’s worth. While Meese attempts to reverse Marbury vs. Madison, the Christ Kids try to reverse all beyond the 17th century. It is depressing that the conflict by such giants as John Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison should be threatened by such legal juveniles as Meese. But such is the age we live in. Here at KGNU, the threat of censorship is from – not the Right – but the Left. A brief perusal of public letters reveals it is the political Left in Boulder that tries to censor that of which they disapprove. Whether anyone preventing the free flow of ideas can be said to be of the Left is an open question. But they think they are. But what matters here is that virtually all sides are allowed free rein on KGNU. We would all be poorer without shows like Hemispheres and Feminist Frequencies, programs that quite obviously could not exist on other stations. These few weekly minutes of mine would be different on other stations of necessity. The point being that KGNU is one of the very few stations that take the platitudes of the First Amendment seriously. That is something these days. Quite something in fact. Support KGNU, not because you necessarily approve of Dark Cloud or Pacifica or NPR or Hemispheres or Feminist Frequencies. Support the exchange of ideas, in public, and pledge your support.
