Abortion Assassins Anew

This is Dark Cloud on Wednesday, February 03, 1999.

The Antiabortion movement took it in the slats yesterday.  A Federal Court decided that a WEB site devoted to inspiring the murder of abortionists was, perhaps, too much, and made the financial assets of the responsible people available to the families of murdered doctors.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake, here, although the guilty parties have transferred assets around to prevent much benefit going to the winners. This Web site, called the Nuremberg Files, would have photos of the abortionists with their addresses, families, and apparent work hours posted in a manner designed to inflame the heart of the traditional hit man for abortion: a socially inept, marginal personality who cannot handle gray-area decisions.  He needs to have things black and white and to be told which is which, and expects to be petted as a good dog if he does the right thing.  He’s the guy they’re looking for in Appalachia who probably set off the Atlanta bomb, and a bunch of abortion clinic explosions, and in so doing murdered a nurse and an off duty officer.

The feeling is that the anti-abortion group wanted to be able to inspire a desired result in a way that would be effective and yet provide them with an alibi.  But they cannot help it, they’re attention starved, and they might as well have signed a confession.  After a doctor had been killed, they would check him off next to his photo like, some put it, a grocery list. If someone was hurt but not killed, his photo would be dimmed.  It was very ham fisted.

Metaphor alert.  In the Middle Ages, in the Middle East, when the ruling tribe wanted a rival down away with or a hated Christian leader eliminated, there was an accepted method that would not run a high risk of war.  So they went to the Old Man of the Mountain.
The old man was supported by a group of Muslim fanatics who would cultivate marginal, easily led young men to go on suicide missions and kill specified individuals.  They stunk of the hashish with which their mentors kept them happy, and the word became corrupted to assassin.  There were various leaders of this cult of assassins, but they were all called The Old Man of the Mountain.   The young men felt or were indoctrinated to feel, that by doing this one brave deed they would be accepted into Paradise by Mohammed himself.  They were also to realize that under normal conditions what they were doing was prohibited by the Koran, but they had been granted special dispensation.  In other words, thou shall not murder, unless it’s Tuesday, and you’ve eaten all your vegetables, and the victim is a secular enemy whose death is paid for in advance.   In the caves of their cult, relics of the martyred assassins or items of veneration were sought and cherished after the event.  This also was a violation of Islamic ideal, but they, you see, were different.  They were forgiven for the specific good that their activity had achieved.  They were Assassins.

I suspect we are all pretty set in our minds about abortion, one way or the other.  I would like to illuminate you with my views on it.  Again.  And again.  First, without any documentation to back me, I suspect that of the pregnancies resulting in abortions performed in the United States last year, the vast majority were the results of misuse of birth control.  I include stupidity in not using birth control as a misuse.  I do not believe that the abortions caused by rape, incest, or any other of the horror stories of the pro-choice group amount to a hill of beans, statistically.   Further, I don’t think that any woman with an IQ in at least two digits uses abortion as a chronic form of birth control.  They are painful, to greater and lesser degrees, and they are expensive.  I have yet to know a woman who did not feel changed by the experience. I bow to that.

I suffer no twinges of spirituality within me, but I’ve read the Bible, and the issue seems pretty clear to me.  Adam does not become a living soul until his first breath.  The issue is addressed nowhere else.  He had no soul before his first breath.  He be de animal.

Still, abortion is a form of aggression, albeit against a proto human.  My contention is that in a civilized society the issue would be moot because there would be no need for many, perhaps any, abortions if people broke down and used birth control or common sense on occasion.

So my argument with the anti-abortionists is rather clear.  I do not feel the Bible is on their side.  I think they want to maintain abortion as a topic to detract us from discussing birth control, which they hate for the liberation it gives women.    It’s a very black and white issue if you can convince people that a two-week-old fetus is a child.

And once you are on that train, with black and white issues, then it becomes increasingly attractive to the young men to strike a blow for good, outside the box, and for him to visualize the adoration he would receive in a just world.  Alas he must wait for the next.  Because the young man looking at wanted posters on the Nuremberg files, breathing in the heady admixture of a point to his life being revealed along with forgiveness for violence, is just listening to another Old Man of the Mountain.  Different faith.  Different drug.  Same assassins.
