A Journalistic Fluke: Lara Logan and The Electorate of Doom

heroes, journalists, and misogyny

This is Dark Cloud on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
Some issues do not die in the normal sequence of news cycles. Some are too easy for the media to milk, fluff, and write about and some are too important. A few are both, and the misogyny revealed by the Limbaugh incident continues to fester and pop. Colorado Springs talk radio host Jimmy Lakey recently asked his listeners if they thought Sandra Fluke, the young woman who testified before Congress about the expense of birth control, spent her "birth control" money on "cigarettes afterwards," "booze," and a "hotel room." Lakey ran for Congress in the - needless to add - 2010 Republican primary for Congressman Perlmutter's seat down Denver way. Lakey said he couldn't believe that Fluke spends $3,000 per year on birth control, $249 a month. How could it cost so much? he wondered. Also needless to add, Fluke never said that. She said "contraception can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school," a duration of three years which brings down the expense proportionately. But, it allowed Lakey to wander his interior synapse trails, the paths of his fear of, and disrespect for, women. It's been my contention that much of our culture and near every culture is a series of laws and norms that protect the majority of men, the third rates, from facing mate rejection or mere tolerance rather than enthusiasm. It may be a group genetic response, for all I know, just as I think it possible bullying is just the bitter last presentation of genetic pruning by characteristics we no longer value as much in adulthood. It's how early man upped the breeding pool, cruel as it was, for the physical characteristics needed to survive, the young shunning, attacking, and rejecting those different in visible ways. It's regressive, absent need for those qualities again, as in war and survival in a world devoid of society. Last night, the beautiful South African and exceptional journalist Lara Logan was at CU to give a chat, and was a huge hit. Logan married a Texan war contractor she met over there in Afghanistan, but I doubt anybody asked her about potential conflict of interest. I didn't attend, but her life story is quite something. Last year she was sexually assaulted on assignment in Egypt by a mob during Arab Spring. Although she does not cash in on that, she says she was raped by many hands and saved only by Muslim women and a few men who dared to stand with them. One of them threw Logan over his shoulders and marched her to safety. We don't know who her attackers were, although the video exists of the early part of her rape with many dentate leers and bulging eyes clearly visible. I hope she knows the names of her rescuers, because imagine how popular those men are among their peers these days. If they still live. Heroes, they, as much as those women who attempted to shame their fellow Egyptians and physically protected her. Frankly, I don't see much difference between those who salivate over the mere prospect of getting to call women sluts for being as sexually free as men want to be and that Egyptian mob. There is a reason strip clubs have burly bouncers protecting their meal tickets, and that's because what happened to Logan would happen to pole dancers if looming violence wasn't available for their protection. And no, we don't see Logan as a poledancer, but by the standards of Egypt and Muslim culture I'm not sure but those men did. Trousers, tighter clothing than Egyptian normal and she is a blonde and lovely. She dresses like any Olde Navy warehouse clerk by our standards, but she was a slut, a prostitute, an unmarried woman to that mob, who apparently consider those terms to be synonyms. And they are not alone. To many in this country, Logan is a slut and a whore although a married woman if she engages in ...... contraception. A Presidential candidate said contraception is a cardinal sin. You don't have to look far in crowd shots of the Republican primary to see the mob faces we saw in Egypt. Republican candidates pander to them, telling them we've got to return to the days of our Founding Fathers and the values they cherished, which included both Slavery and no vote for women or other inferiors. And their mobs eat it up, seeing themselves as the continuation of the Pioneers and their ethics, although photographs reveal the opposite. Morbidly obese men and women do not resemble the physical characteristics Pioneers cherished and which Barack Obama has. And they hate that.
