We Didn't Know At All, We Didn't See a Thing......
The Catholic horrors aren't all Catholic..........

This is Dark Cloud on Wednesday, July 25, 2012.

The guy who killed twelve and wounded 58 others in an Aurora movie theater July 20th was a smart kid, who'd received  a federal grant to attend graduate school.  That included up to $26,000 for “personal expenses.” Naturally, the media wants to know if he used this cash to buy all his weapons and equipment.

The murderer was enrolled at the University of Denver to study neuroscience, but he'd started withdrawing from the program in June. He'd received a grant worth just over $170k for his first year, and this grant was for a “pre-thesis” Ph.D. student.  Such students are referenced as future “outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology,” according to the university.

Just before he started to withdraw, the murderer took an oral exam, described as intense.  There is speculation he may have flunked it. Whether that alone would send him over the edge is doubtful.

It's been pointed out that he attended the midnight showing of the Batman movie, and came dressed as The Joker, a Batman nemesis, who was portrayed by Heath Ledger before dying of a drug overdose.  Ledger won an Academy Award for being the Joker, apparently an exhausting role that ended his relationship with the actress who had his child and contributed to his death by accidental prescription drug combinations. Needless to say, that an actual mass murderer, studying neuroscience, dressed as and committing an act consistent with a fictional character portrayed by an actor who inadvertently killed himself with neurological drugs is not something the media is going to let slip by.  Although, they don't know what to make of it.

This happened the same week that the Penn State pedophilia case with Coach Sandusky came a cropper for that school. They'd asked former FBI Director Louis Freeh to investigate, and the entire Penn State university administration and football program took a well deserved shot in the slats, if not lower.  Head coach Joe Paterno was revealed to have suspected and done nothing at least as far back as 1998. What they suspected was that Jerry Sandusky was bringing at risk young boys into the University showers and having his way with them. Everyone who should have known probably did, but they did nothing because of the fear that it would be bad PR and hurt the football program and, with somewhat less concern, the University.  They were correct, it has demolished the football program for the foreseeable future and humiliated a bunch of posturing Molders of Men. Good.

Most, not all, of the adult males involved are Catholic by religion.  Given that Monsignor William Lynn of Philadelphia was sentenced to prison this week for covering up for pedophile priests, it was all in all a not great week for the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania.  But it also is not unfair or piling on to inquire how the numerous similarities between the Penn State handling of a horrible series of crimes and the international crimes against children of the Church itself are related.  In the very best reading, the guilty parties claim they didn't know exactly what was going on, and it's technically possible that was true.  But, it was their job in each case to know and be aware and - most importantly as Catholics - protect the children.  Protecting children was the last of their concerns.

Lynn will be among the first of those who protected the guilty to go to prison. There remains belief that these practices are new and not installed in the history of the church. But similar accusations were tossed about in the trial of the Templars. It's a safe bet this has happened for centuries all over the world within the church deformed by pointless chastity vows.  It's hardly just the Catholics, but they are the biggest church and feature some of the most revolting canting hypocrites, starting with the current Pope.

But those of us who are atheist or lay people are not really off the hook. People can amass tons of weapons and we, somehow, didn't know?  Our children are suicidal and we don't know? And just like 9-11, where regulation and law not followed allowed murderers access to pilots and control, a murderer can leave his seat, prop open an emergency door, and re-enter the theater dressed to the nines for war with assault rifles and tear gas cannisters.  That's the current version, of course.  Perhaps the doors were often propped open for employees to smoke or to let in their buds. That happens. If it did this time, would they be charged?

Should they be?
